From the recording Seed
After watching powerful films including Suffragette, Made in Dagenham and An Education, witnessing the horrific treatment of women particularly in Suffragette shocked me to the core. I don't know what I was thinking to be oblivious to the sacrifices of so many to bring us to the point women have as many "rights" as they do currently. Those films together with an exchange with a friend in the music business about what she is dealing with had this song spill forth.
Lyrics
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
It’s making me mad
I want to scream
I’m feeling the weight
Can barely breathe
Society’s structured
As a game
With the odds stacked
Squarely in favor of
The male
My name or my smile
Or what I wear
Should never be
Your concern
Who I really am
And what I could possibly give
To the world
Is inconsequential as you make your
Judgement
And see that
You put me in my place
(Over and over and over and over and over again)
Oh when did we decide?
To not do what is right
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
It’s not going away
(Not going a, not going a, not going away)
Imagine you’re trapped inside your home
And have to do everything you’re told
By somebody half as capable
And even if they were fantastic
You are still a prisoner
No money, no choices
For the rest of your unnatural and
Oppressed and prejudiced against life
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
Oh when did we decide?
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
Can’t we just do what’s right?
THE WOMEN PROBLEM
It’s not going away
I’m not going mad
Just want to scream
Equality now
A human dream
