From the recording Seed
All of the music and the first few lines came in a meditation. The movie Suffragette is still looming large in my being, and this song is from the perspective of a character a century or more ago. A young girl expressing her discomfort when realizing she is powerless in a patriarchal society her brother will be allowed to move freely within.
Lyrics
THE PEDESTALS
I am the daughter
And you are the son
I live in fear
You are the only one
The world will count on
To be first and to be free
To hold the reins of
Power over me
To hold power over me
I wished to be
The apple of somebody’s eye
Invisibility’s a cruel disguise
The boys adorn
THE PEDESTALS in every town
Not a single female
To be found
To be found
None to be found
Could there be something better?
When will we agree?
I look inside myself quite sure
My heart and how it beats
Is just the same as
How your heart beats
From time to time
I put this quiet dream aside
Hold hope too tight
You start
To come undone
Am I an alien?
An object to be feared?
I crave the admiration
You are always
Going to feel
Could there be something better?
When will we agree?
I look inside myself quite sure
My heart and how it beats
Is just the same as
How your heart beats
I am the daughter
And you are the son
I can’t accept
You are the only one
The world will count on
To be first and to be free
To hold the reins of power
Over me
