Melting Moments

"…be prepared to lose your heart to Jacobsen, or at the very least, leave singing her lovely, melody-driven songs." New York Press

Melting Moments is filled with songs that are catchy, melodic, timeless pop, kind of like Billy Joel would sing if he were a tall, blonde Australian Woman. Jacobsen wrote, performed and produced the record at Defy Recordings with Robert Smith in New York City, with top session musicians including fellow Aussie, Guitarist Ben Butler (Sting/Bruce Springstein/Suzanne Vega/Mariah Carey) and New Zealand’s Richard Hammond (Broadway's Hamilton/Joan Osborne/Erasure) who played Bass Guitar in her band for six years.

Karen Jacobsen has shared the stage with Neil Sedaka, Norah Jones, Christopher Cross, Cyndi Lauper, Jars of Clay, and her songs have been on U.S. network television shows including Dawson’s Creek, Passions and Around the World For Free.

Karen has sung anthems at major sporting events in the U.S., and performed Advance Australia Fair in her home state, Queensland at the TriNations Wallabies vs South Africa game at Suncorp Stadium in 2009.

“Melting Moments” was released on the Kurly Queen label on August 28th, 2009.

Press...

"Karen’s voice is pure and sweet. Listening to her, I was reminded of The Corrs; there’s that same joy and optimism to the songs. There are very few edges here, although the opening track “Kissing Someone Else” does hint at a darker side. To some the lack of grit may seem like a flaw, but I think there’s something lovely about an album which lifts you up rather than dragging you down. The playful “Merry Go Round” is particularly captivating, while “So Fast” is another folk-tinged pop standout.

This is a really polished album. I was impressed to see Karen didn’t just add her pretty voice, but her production skills and songwriting prowess as well. Both are excellent. With Melting Moments, Karen Jacobsen shows us that her talents go far beyond directing traffic." Lauren Katulka, Sounds of Oz

*This album was released in the USA in 2006 as Kissing Someone Else with an identical tracklist.

Take a Little Drive

Karen Jacobsen

Take a Little Drive is an acoustic piano and vocal record about searching for love, finding solace in connection and the challenges of authentically saying what there is to say. Recorded at Avatar Studios and Defy Recordings and recorded, mixed and mastered with Robert L. Smith in New York City.

With a concert at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre in New York City, Karen Jacobsen celebrated the release of her 8th studio album, navigating the audience through a set of her catchy, timeless, piano pop songs and breathy vocals. Karen performed at the grand piano and welcomed special guest cellist Stephanie Winters.

An award-winning singer and songwriter pre-GPS fame, Karen’s musical career highlights include sharing the stage with Norah Jones, Christopher Cross and Spyro Gyra as well as singing The Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden, Dodger Stadium and Giants Stadium (for 80 000 Jets fans).

Karen moved to New York City from her native Australia with a suitcase and a dream to follow in Olivia Newton-John’s footsteps. From 2000 to 2020 she built a new life and business in the big apple, recording, writing, performing and speaking.

Karen was moved to record this collection of songs after the events in Newtown CT on December 14th, 2012. “It was a deeply disturbing shock, especially having a son a similar age, and it became crystal clear to me it was time to record my next album and to be singing into people’s hearts again.”

Music is a powerful healer. Take a Little Drive is an intimate journey through spaces of the heart.

As I Am

Karen Jacobsen

In cart Not available Out of stock

Recorded in May of 2000 at Tiger Recording in Sydney, Australia, "As I Am" is a collection of songs from the heart. Poignant and magical, this record has been described as brutally honest and heartfelt . In the weeks leading up to her departure from Australia to move to New York City, Karen Jacobsen was in the studio being vulnerable and creating an intimate expression of love and loss, with an underlying sense of hope.

"As I Am shines with an honesty that is reflected in Karen Jacobsen's pure, simple voice and piano playing." --Abby White, Performing Songwriter, July 2003

"Naked...Karen and her piano. If anything else on earth can be so pure, it's yet to be identified." --Independent Songwriter Magazine, March 2002

"...simply her playing the piano and singing in that never-seen-a-cigarette-in-her-life voice." --Jennifer Layton, Indie-Music.com, December 2002

Australian born, New York based Pop Piano Singer and Songwriter Karen Jacobsen has a mission to create an extraordinary life. Whether performing a sold out show at NYC’s The Duplex, to a crowd of 80 000 at Giants Stadium, or in the intimacy of a House Concert setting, a profound love of music, and a desire to connect with others through her songs is at the core of her purpose. Leaving Australia with only one suitcase in May 2000, she arrived in Manhattan to carve her own niche, thriving on the energy of the city, releasing two acoustic piano/vocal records, As I Am and Being Brave, and touring through the US. Her song Supposed To Say was included on the WB's Dawson's Creek DVD; and the Australian Consulate in New York City hosted an event in her honor - the Consul-General himself introducing Karen to the invitation only crowd. She has shared the stage with Norah Jones, Christopher Cross, Jennifer Marks, Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Cox and along with Uncle Kracker and Jars of Clay, made her U.S. Network Television Debut on the NBC-TV Special Dare To Dream, filmed at Mohegan Sun Arena. Originally from Mackay near Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Karen wrote her first song “Kurly Queen” at the age of 7 (now the name of her record label), studied piano, at high school played Dorothy in The Wiz and idolized Olivia Newton-John. Following her music studies in Brisbane, she established her career in Sydney as a regular performer on national television shows including Good Morning Australia, and touring to Malaysia and Thailand. Aussies may also know her as ‘Speechify Karen’ – the speaking voice of Telstra’s Talking Text. Karen’s songs appear on a number of compilation CDs, including the ‘Home’ CD benefiting Children International.

"Jacobsen distinguishes herself...with her stripped down, intimate style-just voice and piano - and amazing vocal talent (startling breath control.)" --Steph Trick, Red Is All The Rage, June 2002

Voice of a Cloud

"Australian Karen Jacobsen's "Being Brave" is a sweet EP. With only 6 tracks, it's all too brief. Her songs are backed with piano, recalling the classic piano-singers like Laura Nyro & Carole King. Like both Nyro & King, one never feels like there's something missing because it's just the woman & her piano. She has a gorgeous voice soaring like a cloud and then breaking with fragility on the opener "Real," "Please don't say all the things I want to hear; please be true to the depth of your heart." Her voice has a beautiful clarity like a soulful Judy Collins. On "Here in My Heart" her voice achieves maximum lift-off, "Connected from soul to wandering soul." Karen's confident piano pounds then reduces to a tinkle on "The Game." "I'm hurt & I'm sad; I want to forget every lovely time we had," she sings on the clever "Hurt." Like Laura Nyro, Jacobsen's song structures are fluid, speeding up and slowing down to reflect an ever-changing emotional climate as on "Happy Endings." The CD concludes with the cheerful "Being Brave." As her fan base from New York City will tell you, Karen Jacobsen is more than a new discovery." Lee Armstrong via Amazon

Beautiful album.

"I heard Being Brave in a grocery store and just had to have the song. Reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and a less dark Joni M. I don't know why she isn't a huge superstar. I've checked out some of her other music and in my opinion this is the cleanest, truest and most powerful expression of her real talent. She is also know as the GPS girl because she is the voice of Australian Siri. Her voice is strong, simple clear and unaffected. The only problem with the album is that it's way too short."
